I heard from Ms. Fernolend, who guided us at Viscri Fortified Church, that in Cisnădioara is the oldest fortified church in Transylvania. However, that did not prepare us for what we discovered there.
The church is up on a hill. The climb is pleasant, through some woods. We are greeted by a massive stone wall and then we see the church.
It sure was different from all the others. First of all, it was build in a Romanesque architecture, a rare occurance in Romania. The entrance portal is simple and majestic. Inside, the sun was casting beams of light through the altar windows. In the center, the altar piece was inscribed with a teutonic cross and inscriptions to the german  heroes fallen in the First World War. One inscription read "Sie kämpften, sie starben, sie leben" (You fought, you died, you live) and another "Gefallen fur des Vaterlandes Grösse und Ehre" (Fallen for the greatness and honour of the fatherland). The walls were covered with plaques with the names of those fallen in battle. I cannot describe the emotions I felt at that moment, surrounded by such an intense evocation of history, even if in fact those soldiers fought at the time against Romania. At the end of the war, it would become their country, but one which would respect their rights.
Truly Romania has a bit of everything beautiful built in Europe by men through the ages, even if on a smaller scale sometimes. I was very happy to discover Cisnădioara church and am already awaiting the chance to return.
