The church with rangers from Viorești, Slătioara

Speaking about churches in Vâlcea County, I have several times mentioned the exterior paintings or frieses,  found under the roof eaves. Perhaps the most beautiful of them all is that of the church dedicated to "The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple" or "The Presentaton of the Blessed Virgin Mary". It is much better known as "The church with the rangers".
Small explanation here. I used the term "ranger" to translate the Romanian word "potecaș". It comes from the word "potecă" which means "path": the "potecași" were armed men (irregular troops) guarding the roads and paths from robbers and evil men. I think "ranger" is the best translation of the term.
I have first read about this marvel and also about the meaning of the frescoes, on Radu Olteanu's blog, Art-Historia. Later, I also read about the very successful restoration of the church here. It is the work of architect Aurel Botez, engineer Tudor Diaconu and restorer Elena Murariu. I wish more monuments were thus restored all over Romania. I wish that heritage would really become a priority and receive adequate funding, so that it may play its role as a beackon for the present and future generations!
One of the more important founders of the church, Captain Ioan Urșanu, is shown leading the rangers (not appearing in the pictures though). Tudor Vladimirescu was also a leader of a ranger troop. Such men, living free, masters of their destiny, are the ones who ignited the spark of national revival some 200 years ago. The painting is also precious for showing details about the clothes and decorations these figures wore in those times.
The church is at the edge of the village, on high ground. Close to it is a ruined old house. It is a pity it is in such a state for it is typical for the region and thus very precious. Secluded, at the edge of both the village and the forrest, it could become a leisure home, but also an etnographical museum. Repairs could still be made...
From the church you can see the nature monument "The Slătioara Pyramids", soon to follow.
