Calafat

On the way to Vidin, northwestern Bulgaria's main city, I stopped to see its smaller Romanian brother, the town of Calafat, on the Danube. It is famous for being the place where the Romanian War of Independence started in 1877, with an artillery duel accross the Danube, but nothing much has happened there since. It has remained a sleepy little town.

Sleepy, but roomy. The main street is wide, spacious and there are many pedestrian zones in the center and on the Danube bank.

There are many old buildings to be seen. Most have never been restored so they have the original patina.

The town, frozen in time, complete with 1990's store windows.

At the main crossroad there is the Heroes Monument, a First World War soldier.

The pedestal has nothing to envy on the statue. It is beautifully sculpted in Art Nouveau style, unfortunately it is quite weathered.

The list of fallen soldiers and the motto of the battle of Oituz: "They shall not pass."

Printre edificiile impunătoare ale orașului provincial: primăria.

The town hall is one of the most impressive buildings.

A good example: in front of the town hall is a statue of Sima Pasaretz, former mayor. He laid the plans for the modern boulevards and started the works for the port.

A bad example: what's with this clown?

Near the town hall is also the statue of Calafat's famous son: actor Ștefan Iordache (1941-2008).

Walking the streets, there are more charming hundred year old houses to be seen.

In another important crossroad is the monument of Tudor Vladimirescu, leader of the 1821 Revolution and forerunner of Modern Romania, founded a quarter of a century later. The inscription is one of his famous quotes: "The people, not the burglars, are the motherland".

Altă declarație, belicoasă, dar dreaptă.

Another, more warmongering, but just declaration: "Let's unload our guns in Turkish flesh, should they come upon us."

Lângă statuie se află o biserică măricică.

Near the statue there is a rather large church.

On the main street there is also the catholic cathedral, built in a more Western style.

O clădire publică superb renovată.

A beautifully restored public building.

The Art Museum, unfortunately closed for the May 1st holiday.

From the center you can go down to the Danube bank. The cathedral is there, along with a group of old villas, the Independence Monument and a park.

The Cathedral. I shall write more about it shortly.

Around the cathedral there are several large villas.

The pedestrian alley leads straight to the Danube park and the Independence Monument.

"În amintirea bombardării Widinului în 17 maiu 1877"

"In remembrance of the bombardment of Widin, May 17th 1877"

"Erected April 28th 1904 with the occasion of the visit of His Majesty King Carol I and the Royal Family in Calafat".

"15 maiu 1877 aici a căzut primul obuz dușman înaintea Princepelui Carol I Domnitorul Țării"

"May 15th 1877 here fell the first enemy shell before Prince Carol I, Ruler of Romania"

There is another monument nearby, honoring Romanians living south of the Danube. Bulgarians and Serbs call them "Wallachians", just like Russians and Ukrainians call Romanians east o the Prut river "Moldovans". The text reads: "In memory of Marița, the Wallachian girl shot by the Turks at the battle of Smârdan while carrying water to Romanian soldiers 1877"
A bit further away can be seen the Calafat-Vidin bridge, or "The New Europe Bridge".
