At the end of the village of Mărăști is the mausoleum for the heroes who fell in the Battle of Mărăști. Built between 1928 and 1938, it is the final resting ground for 5342 Romania, Russian and German soldiers, as well as Marshal Alexandru Averescu and generals Arthur Văitoianu, Alexandru Mărgineanu and Nicolae Arghirescu.

The mausoleum was erected at the initiative of the "Mărăști" society, under the patronage of Queen Mary of Romania, according to a plan designed by the fighting officers at the end of the battle. It was built by architect Pandele Șerbănescu, with sculptures by Aurel Bordenache.

Platforma mausoleului.

In the center of the platform is the statue of Marshal Alexandru Averescu, created by Oscar Späthe, with great detail. Thus, the central role at Mărăști is reserved to the commander in chief of the battle. He had a strong personality and in addition to a major military role, he also had an important political career in inter-war Romania. I love how detailed this sculpture is, the uniform, the harsh expression.

Comandantul Diviziei 6, General Arhirescu"

The underground levels house a museum and the crypts. You can see weapons from the First World War, pictures and documents, for example this one:
"Order of the day nr. 140, July 15th 1917
Officers, soldiers!
The days of July 9th, 10th and 11th shall remain in history, great days for the history of the 6th Division and in our memory, for in those days, repealing the enemy before you, you have proven love for your country and boundless bravery, showing yourselves worthy of our great ancestors.
You fought like lions, and your courage and fury frightened the enemy, who stopped only at the border. Be proud that the whole country looks at you. I am proud to be the commander of such a division of braves. In the name of the superior officers and my own, I thank you all and I hope that from now on you shall show the enemy who the Romanian is and can be. Commander of the 6th Division, General Arhirescu"

"Divizia a III-a, 12 septembrie 1917, Proces verbal nr. 14448/1917

"3rd Division, September 12t 1917, Protocol nr. 14448/1917
In the most glorious battle fought from the beginning of the campaign by the troops of the 3rd Division, on 11th July was liberated the village of Mărăști. Our brave troops also liberated other villages, byt none of them suffered from the enemy's barbarism like the village of Mărăști. It is no longer the village of Mărăști that we knew. It is a ruin. Thus, we have the highest moral and patriotic duty to put thus village back on its feet.
First of all, us, those who have conquered it, we must take the initiative of setting up a fund under the name 'Mărăști', with which later a village must be reconstructed, fairer, larger.

The statue of General Arthur Văitoianu, which should maybe be erected outside the mausoleum, to be admired by a larger number.

In the crypt are found the tombs of Marshal Alexandru Averescu and generals Arthur Văitoianu, Alexandru Mărgineanu and Gheorghe Văleanu, made by sculptors Caroll Thot and Alexandru Bordenache.

The crypt is impressive. Dimply lit by light filtering from above, one is surrounded by the earthly remains of the officers who led the battle of Mărăști.
Regarding the controversy concerning the remains of Marshal Averescu, supposedly moved during the Communist regime, there is no definitive proof in this sense.
